About our Lion Cubs program

Northern Star Council’s Lion Cub program provides exciting indoor and outdoor activities specifically designed for kindergarten boys and their adult partner. Adult partners are there to support and guide, and allow the new Cub Scout to explore and discover.

Because of our year-round program and trained leaders, Pack 151 was invited by the Northern Star Council to participate in this pilot program.

Learning by Doing
A Lion learns by doing these things himself. As he learns and grows, the relationship with their adult partner grows as well. At the conclusion of their kindergarten year, the Lion will transition to the Tiger rank and continue on their journey through Cub Scouting.

Reaching Boys Earlier
With many other organizations offering Kindergarten age programs, the development of the Lion Cubs program is critical for Scouting to regain relevancy in the market of youth activities. Offering a K-12 experience will demonstrate that we do not want to leave youth behind, and give all school aged youth the opportunity to choose Scouting from the long list of activities available to them.

A Pilot Program - Background Info
A few years ago, The Boy Scouts of America's National Council selected the Northern Star, Western Massachusetts and Garden State Councils to spearhead a years long pilot program designed for kindergarten boys. These three Councils have been working closely with BSA National’s Program Innovation Department.

National has kept Lion Cubs to only these three Councils and is tracking it's long term success. We've been told that it will take at least a few more years of study before Lions Cubs rolls out to other Councils, and only then if it is successful in National's overall goals.

By all of our pack's measures and goals, however, it's been a great success for our boys. Pack 151 is proud to have led the way for other Scouts nationwide.

Is your Kindergartener thinking about joining Scouts?
