Okpik: An intro to Scouting's High Adventure programs

posted Jan 6, 2015, 10:07 AM by Cub Scout Pack 151   [ updated Jan 9, 2015, 12:05 PM ]

Okpik Webelos Weekend (pronouced OOK-pik) is a introductory winter camping & trek experience in Ely, MN hosted at BSA's Northern Tier High Adventure Base.  We're fortunate that we live relatively near one of four BSA High Adventure Bases.  The others are Sea Base, FL, Phillmont Ranch, NM, and Summit Bechtel in WV (the site of BSA's National Jamboree).

Current Bears and Webelos I Scouts have the opportunity to attend Okpik Webelos Weekend next winter with one parent/guardian. This is one of BSA's nationally promoted camps. There's high demand and space is very limited. Deposits are required.

Like our Cub Scout summer resident camp, and Polar Cubs, this is a supplemental, extra-cost activity that Scouts can fundraise for this Spring (and next Fall).

IMPORTANT: I'm starting a list of families who are seriously interested in Opkik and are willing write a deposit check if necessary.  Email me ASAP if you'd like to be included in that list. I'll provide more Okpik info to just those families who've asked to be included on the list.

I'm not asking for a commitment yet... just determining serious interest. Here's the list so far:

  1. Sam W.
  2. Ean V.
  3. Jack F.
  4. Luke J.
  5. Isaiah A.
  6. Cole S.
  7. Jonah S.
  8. Matthew F.
  9. Ian K.

Opik Activities

Webelos Okpik Weekend is publicized as a "Cabin Stay" experience. In the past, however, some have had the option to build shelters and stay outside overnight to earn a "Zero-Hero" award.

Okpik activities may include:

  • Snowshoeing
  • X-country skiing
  • Musher dogs and dog sleds
  • Quinzee shelter building
  • Ice fishing
  • Snow/ice sculpture
  • Exploring

I’ve heard from some that Okpik was major turning point in their son's Scouting experience.  Let me know if you'd like to be included in the conversation going forward.  Email markviker.pack151@gmail.com
